The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2650v3 ten-core processor running at 2.3GHz with 20 virtual threads. It ships with 8GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots and includes a PERC H730 RAID controller with 1GB cache. Two 300GB 15K SAS drives are installed in the eight-bay hot-plug chassis. The platform suits small-business virtualization, database or file-serving workloads that need redundant power and remote management.

Sustained load behaviour

The ten-core CPU maintains its 2.3GHz base frequency under continuous multi-threaded workloads thanks to dual 750W redundant power supplies and the 2U airflow design. The PERC H730 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, keeping storage throughput consistent during extended rebuilds or heavy I/O. Memory operates at up to 2400MT/s dependent on the installed processor, and the 24 slots allow expansion to 1536GB for larger working sets. Seven PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot provide room for additional network or accelerator cards.

Thermals, noise and power draw

Dual redundant 750W power supplies share the load, reducing per-unit stress and fan speed during typical operation. The 2U form factor accommodates larger heatsinks and directed airflow, keeping the Xeon and H730 controller within thermal limits without aggressive fan curves. iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller monitors temperatures, power consumption and fan health remotely, allowing administrators to adjust thermal profiles for quieter office deployment or maximum performance in the datacentre. The DVD ROM drive adds minimal heat when idle.
