The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a two-socket rack-mount server delivered in an 8-bay 2.5-inch chassis. It ships with two Xeon E5-2680v4 processors at 2.4 GHz, each offering 14 cores and 35 MB cache, plus 384 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. The system includes a PERC H730 SAS controller, dual 495 W power supplies, iDRAC8 Enterprise remote management and a quad-port Intel network card with two 10 GbE and two 1 GbE connections.

Fit for dense virtualisation.

This configuration suits organisations that need high core counts and large memory capacity for virtualisation, database or compute clusters while using external or shared storage. The eight SFF bays accept SATA or SAS drives only, and no drives are included. Buyers who require direct-attached flash storage or GPU-accelerated workloads should evaluate other platforms because the chassis provides only SATA/SAS drive interfaces and integrated graphics.

Memory ceiling is the deciding factor

The platform supports a maximum of 768 GB of DDR4 across 24 DIMM slots, so the installed 384 GB leaves half the capacity available for future expansion. If the workload will grow beyond that limit, a different server generation must be chosen.
