Dense Storage Server

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD is a 2U rack server built around twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug drive bays and a Perc H730 RAID controller. It ships with dual six-core Xeon E5-2609 v3 processors at 1.9 GHz and 64 GB of DDR4 memory across twenty-four DIMM slots. Three 300 GB 15K SAS drives are installed, leaving nine bays free for capacity expansion. The platform targets workloads that prioritise local storage density over maximum compute threads.

Redundant Power and Cooling

Two 750 W hot-swap power supplies share the load and provide full redundancy without shutting down the system. The 2U chassis uses internal airflow channels to move heat from the processors, memory and drive cage toward the rear exhaust. Fan speeds scale with inlet temperature and component load, so acoustic output rises under sustained heavy I/O but remains within typical data-centre limits for a 2U form factor. Power draw varies with drive count and CPU utilisation.

Twelve-Bay Flexibility and Remote Management

The front drive cage accepts SAS or SATA drives in any mix, letting operators add capacity or performance tiers without cabling changes. A dedicated RAID slot keeps the H730 controller off the six PCIe 3.0 expansion slots, preserving them for network or accelerator cards. iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller provides out-of-band hardware monitoring, firmware updates and virtual console access over a dedicated management port. Four onboard 1 GbE ports handle production traffic, with optional 10 GbE daughter cards available.
