Server identity

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD is a 2U rack server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2650 v3 processor with ten cores at 2.3 GHz. It ships with 96 GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots and a PERC H330 RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60. The chassis holds up to twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug SAS or SATA drives and includes redundant 750 W power supplies. It suits virtualization hosts, storage nodes or database workloads that need dense internal capacity in a standard rack footprint.

Compatibility checks

Verify that your rack provides 2U of vertical space and can accommodate the chassis depth of 26.8 inches and width of 17.44 inches. Confirm the facility can supply two independent power circuits for the redundant supplies. Ensure any drives you add are 3.5-inch SAS or SATA units compatible with the H330 controller; no trays are included. The board offers six PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated RAID slot, so plan expansion cards accordingly. Network connectivity defaults to a four-port 1 GbE daughter card, with optional 10 GbE upgrades available separately.

Build and daily use

The server uses a hot-swap drive bay design so disks can be replaced without downtime, and the redundant power supplies are also hot-swappable. A DVD-ROM drive is fitted as standard. Management is handled through iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller, providing remote console and firmware updates over the network. Video output relies on a Matrox G200 adapter with 8 MB cache, sufficient for installation and basic administration. Rails and bezel are not included, so factor those into your racking plan.
