2U rack server with 24 drive bays

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits in a standard 2U rack space and provides 24 hot-plug 2.5-inch bays for SAS or SATA drives. A single Intel Xeon E5-2650 v3 ten-core processor at 2.3 GHz delivers 20 virtual threads with hyper-threading. 48 GB of DDR4 memory is installed across 24 DIMM slots. The system includes a PERC H330 RAID controller, two 750 W redundant power supplies and a DVD-ROM drive.

Storage ceiling set by 52 TB maximum

The H330 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60 across the SATA interface. Total raw capacity is limited to 52 TB, so arrays larger than that cannot be created on this server. The three factory-supplied 1 TB 7.2 K RPM enterprise SATA drives occupy only a fraction of the available bays. Additional drives must be 2.5-inch SAS or SATA units with hot-plug trays.

Single processor limits memory to 48 GB

Although the platform can address up to 1536 GB when both sockets are populated, the installed single CPU restricts usable memory to 48 GB across the 12 slots wired to that processor. Buyers who need more than 48 GB of RAM must add a second compatible Xeon processor to unlock the remaining 12 DIMM slots. The server ships without an operating system.
