The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for dense compute workloads. It ships with one Intel Gold 6132 processor running at 2.6GHz with 14 cores and 128GB of DDR4 memory across eight 16GB modules. Four 300GB 10K SAS drives and an H730P RAID controller provide immediate storage. The chassis supports up to eight 2.5-inch drive bays for future expansion.

Install with rails and iDRAC

The unit includes sliding rails for standard rack mounting and redundant 1100W power supplies that simplify cabling. Remote management through iDRAC9 Enterprise allows firmware updates and hardware monitoring without physical access. The memory slots are fully populated with eight 16GB DDR4 DIMMs, so any memory upgrade requires removing existing modules. The four installed drives occupy half the available drive bays.

Verify rack depth and network needs

Confirm your rack depth accommodates the 2U chassis with the included rails before ordering. The network daughter card provides two 10Gb RJ45 ports and two 1Gb RJ45 ports; ensure your switch infrastructure supports these speeds. No optical drive is present, so OS installation must use USB or network boot. The server includes a bezel without an LCD display.
