The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for organisations that need dense compute and storage in a standard cabinet. It ships with two Intel Gold 6126 processors, each providing 12 cores at 2.6GHz, and 64GB of DDR4 memory installed as four 16GB modules. The system targets virtualisation hosts, database nodes and mixed workloads that benefit from high core counts and redundant power.

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays with H730P RAID

The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch bays populated with 300GB 10K SAS drives managed by an H730P controller for hardware RAID. Network connectivity comes from an Intel X550 adapter delivering two 10Gb RJ45 ports plus two 1Gb RJ45 ports. Remote administration is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise, and the box includes bezel, rails and power cords for immediate rack installation.

PCIe Gen 3 expansion ceiling

Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for additional networking, storage or accelerator cards, but the platform does not support newer bus generations. Memory runs at 2666 MT/s and the installed capacity of 64GB may limit very large in-memory datasets without further DIMM purchases. The 1100W redundant supplies power the configuration as shipped, yet heavily loaded PCIe cards could demand a capacity review.
