Purpose-built compute density

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server equipped with dual Intel Gold 6142 processors, each providing 16 cores for a total of 32 cores. It ships with 32GB of DDR4 memory and two 2TB 7.2K NL SAS drives managed by an H740P controller. The platform targets organisations that need high core counts in a compact rack footprint.

Build integration and expansion

The chassis supports up to eight 2.5-inch drive bays, leaving six bays available for additional storage. Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots provide room for extra networking, GPU or storage adapters. An Intel X550 network daughter card delivers two 10Gb RJ45 ports and two 1Gb RJ45 ports. Dual 1100W redundant power supplies are included, and iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote management without a separate console.

Included accessories and software impact

Rails, a non-LCD bezel and power cords are supplied, so the unit can be racked immediately. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides full lifecycle automation, remote KVM and telemetry streaming at no extra licence cost. The H740P controller offers hardware RAID with 8GB NV cache, accelerating write-heavy workloads on the installed SAS drives. Buyers who need more storage capacity or faster 10K drives must add drives separately.
