The DELL PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for compute-intensive workloads and storage scalability. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3GHz with 12 cores, and 512GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 16 modules. The system supports up to two processors and a maximum of 3TB of memory across 24 slots. It is suited for virtualization, database and high-performance computing environments.

Installation and common issues

The server includes ready rails and a front bezel for standard rack mounting. Redundant hot-swap 750W power supplies allow replacement without downtime. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays are populated with 400GB SATA SSDs connected to a PERC H730P controller with 2GB cache and battery backup. The controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Network connectivity uses a quad-port daughter card with two 1GbE and two 10Gb SFP+ ports. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides remote management.
