Dual Xeon Gold 6130 server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualization and database workloads that need two-socket compute density. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors running at 2.1 GHz with 16 cores each, 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules, and a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management come standard.

Memory headroom and storage limits

The 24 DIMM slots support up to 3 TB of DDR4, giving ample room to grow beyond the installed 256 GB when workloads expand. Eight 2.5-inch bays are populated with 600 GB 10 K SAS drives delivering fast sequential throughput for transactional workloads; the H730P handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Once all bays are filled, adding capacity requires external enclosures or a chassis change.

Upgrade path from single-socket

Teams moving from a single-socket 1U server or an older two-socket platform gain double the core count, larger memory ceiling and dual 10 Gb SFP+ ports on the X520/I350 daughter card. The jump is worthwhile when current hardware saturates CPU threads, memory slots or 1 GbE links, and the 2U form factor still fits the existing rack allocation.
