The Dell PowerEdge R740 fits a standard 2U rack space and ships with two Intel Silver 4210R processors, each offering ten cores at 2.4 GHz. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 memory are installed across four 16 GB modules running at 2666 MT/s. The system includes a PERC H730P RAID controller and two 120 GB SATA SSDs for boot or caching duties.

PCIe Gen 3 expansion ceiling

Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for additional networking, storage or accelerator cards. The integrated Intel X550 network daughter card already provides two 10 Gb RJ45 ports and two 1 Gb RJ45 ports. No optical drive bay is present, so external media or network boot methods are required for installation.

64 GB DDR4 memory limit as shipped

The configured 64 GB capacity suits moderate virtualisation or database tasks but cannot be expanded without adding modules to the remaining DIMM slots. Buyers who need larger in-memory datasets or higher VM density will have to populate the empty slots with compatible DDR4 RDIMMs. The dual 1100 W redundant power supplies support the current load and future upgrades.
