The Dell PowerEdge R740 arrives as a 2U rackmount chassis populated with two Xeon Gold 6226R processors running at 2.9 GHz and 128 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. Eight 3.5-inch drive bays and a PERC H730P RAID controller are ready for SATA storage. Integrated graphics and a 10 GbE 562T dual-port adapter handle display and network duties. The system ships with dual 750 W power supplies and an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence for remote management.

Verify rack space and storage plan

Confirm the rack can accommodate a 36-inch deep unit and that the 40-pound weight is within the rail rating. No drives are installed, so you must supply SATA hard drives or SSDs for the eight bays. Ensure the PERC H730P controller firmware matches your RAID requirements and that the iDRAC9 Enterprise licence covers the features you need. Memory uses DDR4 ECC registered modules only; other DDR generations will not fit.

Fits standard 2U deployments

Dual 750 W supplies provide redundancy for the processors, memory and storage controller. The eight 3.5-inch bays free you to choose capacity and RAID level without proprietary drive carriers. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables out-of-band monitoring, freeing a dedicated management port. Two processor sockets are fully populated, so future CPU upgrades are not possible within this chassis.
