The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation clusters, database nodes or dense file storage. Dual Xeon Silver 4214R processors at 2.4 GHz deliver 24 cores total, while 128 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory supports heavy consolidation. Eight 3.5-inch drive bays accept SATA disks behind a PERC H730P RAID controller. A 10 GbE 562T dual-port adapter handles high-throughput network traffic.

Thermals and power

Two 750 W power supplies share the load and provide redundancy in normal operation. The chassis measures 36 by 24 by 10 inches and weighs 40 lb, fitting standard racks with room for airflow. Integrated graphics and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management add minimal heat. Fan speeds scale with inlet temperature, keeping acoustic output low during typical business-hour workloads.

Sustained load behaviour

Under continuous compute or storage demand the dual CPUs maintain 2.4 GHz across all 12 cores per socket thanks to 16.5 MB cache each. The H730P controller sustains parity calculations across full arrays without throttling. Redundant power supplies and updated firmware ensure stability during extended burn-in or production runs. Memory capacity can grow to 3 TB if workloads expand.
