The Dell PowerEdge R740xd packs two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each with 24 cores at 2.1 GHz, into a 2U rack chassis. With 128 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 24 slots, it targets virtual desktop infrastructure and software-defined storage workloads that demand high core density and memory bandwidth in limited rack space.

Headroom and limits

Eight of the 24 memory slots are populated, leaving 16 slots open for expansion up to the 3 TB maximum. The 24-bay 2.5-inch front panel holds two 300 GB 10K SAS drives on a PERC H730P 2 GB controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through, so capacity scales with additional SAS or SATA drives until the bay count or controller throughput is reached.

Build integration

Dual 1100 W platinum hot-swap supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management simplify deployment in standard racks using the included rails and bezel. A quad-port X520/I350 daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for storage or cluster traffic, while the LGA 3647 platform and C620 chipset define the processor and memory upgrade path without requiring chassis changes.
