Enterprise 4U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R930 is a 4U rack server built for compute-intensive enterprise workloads. It ships with four Intel Xeon E7-8891 v4 processors, each running at 2.8 GHz with 10 cores. The system includes 384 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 48 modules. This configuration targets organisations running large databases, virtualisation clusters or ERP platforms.

Storage controller and networking

A Dell PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages four 600 GB 10K SAS drives in a 2.5-inch hot-plug bay. The controller supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for flexible data protection. Network connectivity comes from an Intel X520/I350 daughter card providing two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports. Four 1100 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC8 Enterprise remote management complete the package.

Scaling beyond the base configuration

The chassis supports up to 24 hot-plug 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives and up to eight front-accessible NVMe PCIe SSDs for additional I/O performance. Memory capacity can grow to 12 TB across 96 DIMM slots for in-memory database workloads. Buyers who need more storage bays than the four included drives or who require GPU acceleration will find the current drive count and Matrox G200 graphics limiting.
