Four-socket Xeon server for heavy workloads

The PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server built around four Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores each. It ships with 768 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 24 slots, leaving 24 slots free for expansion up to the platform maximum of 6 TB. This configuration targets organisations running large databases, virtualisation clusters or in-memory analytics that need high core counts and memory capacity in a compact rack footprint.

Memory headroom and storage limits

The 768 GB installed provides substantial headroom for most enterprise applications, while the 48 total DIMM slots allow scaling to 6 TB when workloads demand it. Storage is handled by a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Two 300 GB 10 K SAS drives are included in the eight 2.5-inch bays, so additional drives are required for capacity-heavy deployments or higher IOPS.

Network and management inclusions

A quad-port network daughter card delivers two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections for flexible top-of-rack connectivity. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables full out-of-band remote management including virtual console, power control and hardware monitoring. The package also includes redundant 1600 W platinum power supplies, sliding rails and a front bezel for immediate rack installation.
