Capacity and sustained throughput

Four terabytes provide room for operating systems, databases and bulk archives on a single spindle. The 7200RPM speed and 128MB cache keep sequential reads steady for backup targets and near-line workloads. Random I/O will saturate before the interface does, so heavy transactional loads need more spindles or flash.

SAS 6Gb/s interface limits

The 6Gb/s SAS link caps maximum burst transfer at the bus level, not the media. Real-world sustained rates sit well below that ceiling because the platters cannot feed data fast enough. The drive works in the listed PowerEdge models from the R310 through T710 families, but it will not negotiate 12Gb/s speeds on newer backplanes.
