The Dell VRTX 5U rack server combines two M630 compute blades with shared storage and networking in a single chassis. Each blade runs dual Intel E5-2630v3 processors at 2.4GHz with eight cores and 256GB of DDR4 memory. The system targets organisations that need consolidated virtualisation or database workloads without managing separate rack units.

Shared infrastructure impact

Twelve 2.4TB 10K SAS drives connect to a single S130 RAID controller, presenting one storage pool to both blades. A single 1GB switch module handles internal traffic, while four 1600W redundant power supplies feed the entire enclosure. Eight flexible PCIe slots, three full-height and five low-profile, are available for additional I/O cards across the platform.

Interface and capacity limits

The S130 controller operates over SAS without hardware RAID acceleration, so parity rebuilds and heavy random writes will be slower than on dedicated PERC cards. The 1GB switch module caps east-west blade communication at gigabit speeds, limiting clustered applications that demand higher throughput. Only two blade bays are populated, leaving no room for additional compute nodes within this chassis.
