The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 processors, each providing twelve cores at 2.3 GHz for a total of 24 cores and 48 threads. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory across 24 DIMM slots and includes two 146 GB 15 K SAS drives managed by an H240ar controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Redundant 500 W hot-swap power supplies are fitted as standard.

Sustained load behaviour

Under continuous workloads the dual 12-core CPUs maintain their 2.3 GHz base frequency across all 24 cores, while the 15 K SAS drives deliver consistent 6 Gbps throughput for database or virtualisation I/O. The H240ar controller handles parity calculations for RAID 5, 6, 50 and 60 without a dedicated cache, so sustained write performance scales with the number of drives installed in the eight SFF bays. Redundant power supplies and hot-swap drive carriers keep the platform online during component replacement.

Upgrade context

This system replaces earlier G8 or single-socket servers where core count, memory capacity or SAS drive density were limiting factors. The jump is worthwhile when a workload needs 24 physical cores, up to 64 GB of DDR4 in a 2U footprint, or the ability to expand to 24 SFF bays with additional backplanes. It is not suited for buyers who require NVMe boot drives, GPU compute acceleration, or memory configurations beyond the 64 GB currently installed.
