The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rackmount server built around a single Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 processor with twelve cores running at 2.3 GHz. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory installed across 24 DIMM slots and includes the Smart HBA H240ar controller for SAS and SATA drives. The chassis provides twelve 3.5-inch LFF drive bays and dual 500 W redundant hot-swap power supplies.

H240ar controller and 12 Gb SAS limits

The Smart HBA H240ar handles 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA links with RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Twelve front LFF bays accept 3.5-inch drives; an optional rear cage can add three more LFF or two SFF bays but consumes the second riser slot. No drives are included, so storage capacity depends entirely on the disks the buyer installs. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics core provides only basic 16 MB video output for management consoles.

128 GB installed memory and 3 TB ceiling

The system arrives with 128 GB populated across the 24 slots, reaching the practical single-processor limit of 128 GB when using 64 GB modules per channel. Adding a second Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 CPU unlocks the full 3 TB maximum across all 24 slots, but the current configuration leaves no headroom for memory expansion without adding the second processor. Buyers who need more than 128 GB of RAM or a second CPU must source those components separately.
