The IronKey D500S is a 16GB USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A drive built around hardware-based XTS-AES 256-bit encryption. It targets government, military and enterprise users who must meet FIPS 140-3 Level 3 (Pending) requirements and data-protection laws such as GDPR, HIPAA, SOX and CCPA. The zinc casing is waterproof, dustproof and crush-resistant with epoxy filling to resist physical tampering.

Practical limits of the USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface

The drive reads at up to 165MB/s and writes at up to 22MB/s over the USB 3.2 Gen 1 connection. These speeds are well below the interface’s theoretical ceiling, so the drive will not saturate the bus on large sequential transfers. The Class 4 rating reflects sustained write performance suited to documents and records rather than high-bitrate media workflows.

Replaces software-encrypted

It upgrades from drives that rely on host-based encryption or offer no hardware protection, removing the risk of keys or plaintext remaining on the host system.
