What it is and who it serves

The Linkreal quad-port adapter installs four M.2 NVMe drives through a single PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot using a PLX PEX8747 switch. Each drive receives a dedicated PCIe 3.0 x4 lane so throughput does not depend on motherboard bifurcation. Servers and high-end workstations gain dense, high-speed storage without occupying multiple expansion slots.

Upgrade path and when it matters

The card replaces setups that rely on chipset-limited M.2 slots or bifurcation support that many platforms lack. The jump is worthwhile when the CPU or PCH cannot split a x16 link into four x4 links natively, or when all onboard M.2 sockets are already populated and additional NVMe capacity is required.

Practical limits of the interface

Bandwidth per drive is capped by the PCIe 3.0 x4 electrical link, so peak throughput cannot exceed what that generation allows. The adapter also requires a physical x16 slot and adequate case airflow for the integrated fan and heatsink assembly. Operating-system support listed by the supplier stops at Windows XP, though the manufacturer highlights mention Windows 10, Windows Server 2016 and Linux kernel 3.3 or later.
