Dell PowerEdge M640 blade for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge M640 blade installs two Xeon Gold 5215 processors running at 2.5 GHz with 10 cores each and 13.75 MB cache. It ships with 384 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory and supports up to 1 TB total. Two 1.8 TB SAS hard drives connect through a PERC H330 RAID controller. Remote management uses iDRAC9 Enterprise and a 10 GbE dual-port 562T adapter handles networking.

Upgrade from single-socket or lower-memory blades

Replacing a single-socket blade or one with less than 384 GB of memory adds 20 cores and a large memory pool for virtualisation density. The jump is worth it when workloads need more simultaneous threads than a single processor can deliver or when memory capacity limits the number of virtual machines per node. The PERC H330 controller supports the two installed drives in a mirrored set for redundancy.

Under continuous load the dual 5215 CPUs maintain their 2.5 GHz base frequency within the blade's thermal envelope. The 384 GB DDR4 subsystem feeds all 20 cores without swapping to the SAS drives. iDRAC9 Enterprise provides ongoing telemetry so administrators can track temperature and power trends over time. The 10 GbE link keeps storage and migration traffic flowing during extended operations.
