Purpose-built server for virtualization

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors running at 2.3 GHz with 3.2 GHz turbo across 12 cores each. It ships with 32 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory and a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Twelve 3.5-inch 4 TB enterprise SATA drives spinning at 7.2 K RPM provide high-capacity storage for databases, virtualization hosts or software-defined storage clusters.

Dual redundant power and remote management included

Two 750-watt platinum-efficiency power supplies deliver redundancy for continuous operation in production environments. The integrated dual-port Gigabit Ethernet adapter handles baseline network connectivity while iDRAC 9 Express enables out-of-band remote monitoring and administration. Front bezel and ready rails are not included, so plan for separate mounting hardware and physical security if required.

Storage ceiling and expansion limits

The 12-bay 3.5-inch chassis caps internal drive count at twelve SATA or SAS devices without additional enclosures. The H730P controller operates at 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA speeds, which sets the throughput ceiling for the installed 4 TB drives. Memory capacity is limited to the factory 32 GB configuration unless additional DIMMs are sourced separately, and PCIe expansion slots remain unpopulated for future networking or storage controller upgrades.
