This new Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out workloads. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors run at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores each. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory and a PERC H730P controller with battery-backed cache. Eight 600 GB 10 K SAS drives and quad-port 1 GbE plus dual 10 GbE networking come pre-installed.

The dual-socket design and 24 memory slots support up to 3 TB of DDR4, fitting virtualisation hosts and in-memory databases. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise simplify fleet management. The 1U chassis has no room for full-height accelerators, so buyers who need GPU compute should look elsewhere. Storage bays accept only 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives.

PERC H730P controller decides RAID flexibility

The installed PERC H730P 2 GB controller provides 12 Gb/s SAS connectivity and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode.
