The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack-mounted server system designed for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores and a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules. A PERC H730P storage controller with 2 GB cache provides RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 support.

Eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA hot-swap bays

The chassis provides eight front-accessible 2.5-inch trays that accept both SAS and SATA drives, backed by the H730P controller’s 12 Gb/s bandwidth and battery-backed cache. No drives are included, so capacity and performance scale with the media chosen. The 24 DIMM slots allow memory expansion up to 3 TB when workload demands grow.

System memory uses DDR4 registered ECC only

Installed memory is DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC; the platform does not support other DDR generations. The 24 slots are populated with four 16 GB modules, leaving 20 slots free for expansion up to the 3 TB maximum. Controllers and processors are fixed to the LGA 3647 socket and Intel C620 chipset, so upgrades remain within this architecture.
