Dual-socket 1U server for dense compute

The PowerEdge R640 packs two Xeon Gold 6148 processors into a 1U rack chassis, delivering 40 cores at 2.4 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. It targets scale-out workloads such as virtualization clusters, HPC nodes and database tiers where rack density and core count matter more than GPU acceleration.

Upgrades from single-socket or older 2U platforms

Moving from a single-socket 620-chipset box or a previous-generation 2U server adds 20 cores per socket and doubles memory channels without expanding rack footprint. The jump is worth it when licensing is core-based and the workload scales across 40 threads, but it does not help workloads that need GPU density or more than 24 DIMM slots.

Sustained load behaviour

Dual hot-swap power supplies and the C620 chipset keep all 40 cores fed during long render, simulation or database jobs. The H730P controller with 2 GB cache maintains RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60 throughput across eight 2.4 TB 10 K SAS drives, while the X520/I350 card provides 2x 10 Gb SFP+ and 2x 1 GbE links for steady east-west traffic. iDRAC9 Enterprise gives remote telemetry without host OS dependence.
