Dense compute in 1U

The PowerEdge R650xs packs two Xeon Silver 4316 processors into a single rack unit, giving 40 total cores at 2.3 GHz base and 3.4 GHz turbo. 128 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory feeds virtualization, cloud and dense analytics workloads. Front-access trays accept ten 2.5" SAS or SATA drives managed by a PERC H745 controller with 4 GB NV cache. Dual 1400 W platinum supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise complete the platform.

Storage interface limits

The H745 controller handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across SATA and SAS devices. NVMe drives are not supported by this controller, so all-flash speed tiers require a different backplane and controller combination. Ten bays cap raw capacity at the sum of the installed drives; expansion beyond the chassis means adding another server. The quad-port 1 GbE OCP 3.0 card saturates at 1 Gbps per port, so heavier east-west traffic needs a faster mezzanine or PCIe NIC.

Upgrade path from prior 1U density

This system replaces earlier single-socket or lower-core 1U servers where memory slots or drive bays ran out first. The jump is worth it when workloads need two full sockets, 1 TB maximum memory headroom and ten front bays in the same rack space. Buyers who need GPU acceleration, more than two processors or native NVMe RAID should look at platforms built for those requirements.
