This new Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation, database and compute-intensive workloads. It ships with two Intel Gold 6132 processors, each running at 2.6GHz with 14 cores and 19.25M cache. The system includes 64GB of DDR4 memory in a 4x 16GB PC4-2666 configuration. Eight 1.2TB 10K SAS drives and an H730P RAID controller provide high-speed local storage.

Suits teams needing dense 2U compute

Organisations that require integrated 10Gb Ethernet will benefit from the Intel X550 NDC with two 10Gb RJ45 and two 1Gb RJ45 ports. Buyers who need more than eight 2.5-inch drive bays or an internal optical drive should consider other platforms. Workloads requiring GPU acceleration are not supported by the standard configuration. The fixed 64GB memory capacity limits applications that demand larger in-memory datasets.
