The PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors running at 2.4 GHz, each providing 20 cores for a total of 40 threads. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory across four modules, leaving 20 DIMM slots open for expansion up to 3 TB. The platform targets virtualization hosts, database nodes and high-performance computing clusters that demand dense core counts in a standard rack footprint.

Thermals noise and power under load

Dual redundant 750-watt platinum-rated power supplies share the load and maintain operation if one unit fails. The 2U chassis uses Dell's engineered airflow design to cool both CPUs, the PERC H730P controller and eight 2.5-inch SSDs without exceeding typical data-centre acoustic limits. Power draw scales with CPU utilisation and accelerator cards; the platinum-efficiency PSUs reduce waste heat at every load level.

Included controller networking and management extras

The PERC H730P with 2 GB cache enables RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode, letting the eight 400 GB SATA SSDs be grouped for capacity, redundancy or raw performance. A quad-port Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 GbE SFP+ links for flexible fabric connectivity. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides full out-of-band remote management including virtual console, power control and firmware updates. ReadyRails and a front bezel are supplied for immediate rack installation.
