Dual-socket Xeon Bronze server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 arrives with two Xeon Bronze 3106 processors running at 1.7 GHz and 384 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. It targets organisations that need a dense 2U rack platform for virtualisation, database or high-performance compute workloads. The chassis supports up to eight 3.5-inch drive bays and ships without drives installed. Remote management is handled by an iDRAC9 Enterprise licence.

Build integration and expansion

Dual 750 W power supplies provide redundancy for continuous operation. The PERC H730P RAID controller manages SATA storage and frees CPU cycles for application tasks. A 10 GbE dual-port 562T adapter supplies high-throughput networking without occupying additional PCIe slots. Memory capacity can scale to 3 TB across 24 DIMM slots when workloads grow. Rail kits are available separately for rack mounting.

Capacity headroom and limits

The 384 GB DDR4 configuration suits large in-memory databases and heavy virtual machine densities. Eight 3.5-inch bays allow substantial raw storage when populated with SATA drives. Maximum memory reaches 3 TB, so headroom remains for future expansion. The Bronze 3106 eight-core processors set a ceiling on single-thread performance and total core count for heavily threaded jobs.
