The Dell PowerEdge R740xd packs twelve 3.5-inch bays into a 2U rack frame, giving capacity-hungry workloads a single-chassis home. Two Xeon Gold 5218 processors at 2.3 GHz deliver thirty-two cores for parallel jobs such as backup targets or software-defined storage nodes. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory ships installed, with headroom to grow toward the three-terabyte maximum. The PERC H730P RAID controller manages the drive array behind the front panel.

Front-access drive carrier and dual power

Twelve hot-swap carriers slide out from the front, so failed disks can be replaced without pulling the server from the rack. A pair of 1100 W supplies share the load and keep the system running if one unit fails. Remote management runs through iDRAC9 with an Enterprise licence, allowing firmware updates, power cycling and console redirection from anywhere. A 10 GbE two-port 562T adapter provides high-throughput network connectivity for replication traffic.

Twelve-bay limit defines the fit

The twelve-drive ceiling makes this chassis the right choice when raw capacity matters more than all-flash density. Buyers who need more than twelve spindles must look at a JBOD expansion or a different platform. The integrated GPU handles basic video output only, so GPU-accelerated workloads are not supported. No drives are included, letting the buyer populate the bays with the exact SATA media the workload demands.
