The Dell PowerEdge R740xd chassis holds up to 24 small-form-factor drives in a 2U rack frame. One Xeon Silver 4114 processor at 2.2 GHz with ten cores and 256 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory is installed. The PERC H730P RAID controller manages SAS connectivity and two 1100 W power supplies provide redundancy. Integrated graphics and a 10 GbE two-port 562T adapter handle display and network duties. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables full remote management.

Tool-less rail mounting and front drive access

The server slides into a standard rack on the optional rail kit and locks without tools. All 24 drive bays face the front so SAS drives can be swapped while the system runs. The H730P controller requires a matching cable kit for the backplane; missing cables are the most common reason a new build fails to detect storage. Firmware on the controller, iDRAC and BIOS ships at the latest stable version, but a version mismatch between controller and backplane firmware can still prevent the array from initialising.

Verify rack depth and power before ordering

The unit measures 36 inches deep, so confirm your rack enclosure provides at least that much clear space behind the front rails. Each power supply draws up to 1100 W; ensure your PDU circuits and plug types match the supplied leads. No drives are included, so you must procure SAS drives or SSDs that the H730P supports. Maximum memory capacity is 3 TB; if your workload needs more than the installed 256 GB, plan for additional DDR4 ECC RDIMMs and a second processor to reach the 24 DIMM slots.
