The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server built around four Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors running at 2.30 GHz with a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency. Each CPU provides 12 cores, delivering 48 total cores for heavily threaded workloads. The system ships with 64 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across 48 available slots. It targets organisations running databases, virtualisation clusters or analytics that demand maximum socket density in a compact rack footprint.

Enterprise storage and networking

Eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives connect to a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. A quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for flexible fabric integration. Dual 1600 W platinum hot-swap power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise remote management keep the platform running and serviceable without physical access. Scalability within the 3U limit

Memory capacity can grow to 6 TB using the 48 DDR4 slots, but the four-socket maximum is already populated so CPU expansion stops here. The 2.5-inch drive bay count is fixed at eight, limiting internal SAS or SATA storage to the installed 1.2 TB drives unless external enclosures are added. Network bandwidth is capped at the provided 10 Gb SFP+ interfaces; no additional onboard ports exist. Buyers needing more internal drives, higher single-thread frequency or GPU acceleration must look beyond this chassis.
