The Dell PowerEdge R940 packs four Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors, each with 20 cores at 2.4 GHz and a 3.7 GHz turbo, into a 3U rack chassis. It targets organisations running virtualisation clusters, in-memory databases or high-throughput analytics that need maximum core count per rack unit.

64 GB DDR4 now, 6 TB ceiling later

The system ships with 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four modules, leaving 44 of the 48 DIMM slots free for expansion. The C620 chipset supports up to 6 TB, so memory-heavy workloads can scale without replacing the platform.

PERC H730P, quad-port networking.

A PERC H730P 2 GB controller drives eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA trays with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through. An Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, while iDRAC9 Enterprise handles remote management.
