4U rack server for in-memory workloads
The Dell PowerEdge R960 is a 4U rack server designed for large in-memory databases, dense virtualization and business-critical workloads. It accepts up to four Intel Xeon Scalable processors with a maximum of 60 cores per processor. The chassis provides 64 DDR5 DIMM slots supporting RDIMMs at 4800 MT/s and a total memory capacity of 16 TB. No processors, memory or storage are installed.
Security features and storage expansion
Cryptographically signed firmware, Silicon Root of Trust, Secure Boot, Secure Erase and Secured Component Verification protect the platform at the hardware level. A TPM 2.0 module with FIPS and CC-TCG certification is included. The 2.5-inch drive chassis supports up to 16 SAS or SATA drives with Smart Flow cooling and a PERC11 controller. The system also accommodates up to four double-wide GPUs for accelerated workloads.
64 DDR5 slots define maximum capacity
The 64 DDR5 slots set the hard limit of 16 TB total memory and determine which RDIMM modules are compatible. Buyers needing more memory capacity or a different memory generation cannot use this platform.

Questions sur cet article
Will the 64 DDR5 DIMM slots need any firmware updates before I populate them with 4800 MT/s RDIMMs?
The server ships with cryptographically signed firmware and Silicon Root of Trust, so any memory configuration is validated at boot; Dell recommends applying the latest iDRAC9 and BIOS updates before full population.
Which limit appears first when all four Xeon processors run sustained workloads — memory bandwidth or the 16 TB capacity ceiling?
With 64 slots at 4800 MT/s the theoretical bandwidth is very high, so the 16 TB maximum capacity is the practical ceiling for large in-memory databases.
How loud and hot does the 4U chassis get when 16 SAS/SATA drives and four CPUs operate continuously?
The Smart Flow 2.5-inch chassis is designed for dense configurations; Dell specifies acoustics and thermal ratings in the technical guide for full-load conditions.
