Purpose-built 5U server

The Dell PowerEdge T440 is a 5U tower server fitted with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency and twelve cores. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory are installed across two slots. A PERC H330 storage controller manages four 1.92 TB SATA solid-state drives in the front bays. Dual gigabit Ethernet ports and iDRAC 9 Express provide baseline connectivity and remote management for virtualization, database or file-serving workloads.

Verify power, rack space and memory plan

Confirm that your facility can supply two 750 W platinum-efficiency power supplies with the appropriate IEC leads. The chassis occupies 5U of rack height if you use the optional conversion kit; otherwise it sits as a tower. Sixteen DIMM slots are available in total, supporting up to 1 TB of DDR4 ECC registered memory, so plan any additional modules around the two populated slots. Ensure your operating system and hypervisor support the installed Xeon Scalable architecture.

Hot-swap bays and redundant power simplify uptime

The front panel holds sixteen 2.5-inch hot-swap drive bays accepting SAS, SATA or SSD media, allowing drive replacement without shutdown. Two redundant 750 W power supplies share the load and can be swapped individually while the server runs. iDRAC 9 Express enables remote power cycling, console redirection and firmware updates over a dedicated management port. Front bezel and ready rails are not included, so factor those into rack-mount preparation.
