Z170 ATX platform for LGA 1151 CPUs
The board uses the Intel Z170 chipset in an ATX layout and accepts 6th and 7th Generation Core i7, i5, i3, Pentium and Celeron processors in the LGA 1151 socket. Four 288-pin DDR4 slots run in dual-channel mode and support memory speeds from 2133 up to 3466 when overclocked, with a maximum capacity of 64 GB. Expansion includes one PCIe 3.0 x16 slot, a second x16 slot wired at x8, a third at x4 and three x1 slots, all conforming to the 3.0 standard.
Passive cooling and modest power draw
The chipset and voltage-regulator area are cooled by heatsinks without dedicated fans, so acoustic output is limited to case and CPU coolers. Intel GbE LAN and the Realtek ALC1150 audio codec add negligible load, while the six SATA 6 Gb/s ports, three SATA Express connectors and two M.2 sockets draw only the power required by attached drives. Typical idle consumption stays low because no active components spin on the board itself.
Steady operation under prolonged load
During extended workloads the VRM heatsinks absorb heat from the CPU power phases without throttling, provided the chassis supplies adequate airflow. PCIe 3.0 links remain stable at x16, x8 and x4 widths, and the dual-channel memory controller sustains the configured DDR4 frequency without errors. Storage throughput across the six SATA and three SATA Express ports stays consistent, and the Intel LAN controller maintains 1 Gbps line rate for long transfers.

Questions sur cet article
How do I install the board in an ATX case and which standoff alignment step is often missed?
Mount the ATX board using all nine standard standoffs, then double-check that the extra standoff near the rear I/O cut-out is fitted so the board cannot flex when you tighten the 24-pin and 8-pin power connectors.
What maintenance or replacement will the Realtek ALC1150 audio subsystem need over time?
The codec itself is solid-state and needs no service; only the electrolytic capacitors on the audio PCB section may age after several years and can be swapped individually if noise appears.
What thermal limit appears first when the VRM runs sustained heavy loads?
The heatsink on the CPU power phase area saturates first, so case airflow must keep VRM temperatures below the throttle point of the attached processor.
