Socket and generation fit
This MSI Z270 GAMING M5 motherboard uses the LGA 1151 socket and the Intel Z270 chipset. It accepts 6th and 7th generation Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors plus Pentium and Celeron models for the same socket. The board will not work with 8th generation CPUs.
Memory capacity and speed ceiling
Four 288‑pin DDR4 slots support up to 64 GB in dual‑channel mode. With a 7th generation processor the board can run memory at 3800, 3600, 3200, 3000, 2800, 2600, 2400 or 2133 MT/s. With a 6th generation processor the supported speeds are 3600, 3200, 3000, 2800, 2600, 2400 or 2133 MT/s.
Expansion layout and onboard I/O
Three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots operate in x16/x0/x4 or x8/x8/x4 configurations alongside three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots. Storage includes six SATA 6Gb/s ports and two M.2 Key M slots for 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 devices with PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA signalling. Audio uses the Realtek ALC1220 codec for 7.1‑channel output and networking is handled by a Killer E2500 1 Gbps LAN controller.

Questions sur cet article
What does the DDR4 3800(OC) figure mean once the board is in a real machine?
With a 7th Gen Intel Core processor installed, the four 288-pin slots can run DDR4 memory at up to 3800 MT/s when overclocked, delivering 64 GB maximum capacity in dual-channel mode.
What interface does the M.2 slot use and what speed does it cap at in practice?
Each M.2 Key M slot connects through PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA 6Gb/s, so the practical ceiling is PCIe 3.0 x4 bandwidth or the SATA 6Gb/s limit, whichever the installed drive uses.
What does the board physically need to fit or mount in a case?
The ATX form factor requires a case with ATX mounting points and an I/O shield cut-out; the package includes the shield but no mounting screws, so standard ATX standoffs and screws are needed.
