12-megapixel Sony IMX708 sensor with phase-detection autofocus, HDR up to 3 megapixels, and a 67-degree vertical field of view on a compact CSI-2 board

  • 12 MP Sony IMX708 sensor captures detailed images
  • Phase detection autofocus locks focus quickly
  • 67° wide vertical field of view fits more in frame
  • NoIR design enables infrared photography projects
  • Compact 0.98×0.94×0.45 in board fits tight builds

12 MP Wide NoIR Camera Module

The Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 Wide NoIR is a compact development board featuring a Sony IMX708 12-megapixel back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor. It connects via CSI-2 and is fully supported by the libcamera library across all Raspberry Pi computers. The module retains the same PCB footprint and mounting holes as the previous Camera Module 2.

Phase Detection Autofocus with 5 cm Close Focus

This module includes phase detection autofocus (PDAF) for rapid focusing and a minimum focus distance of 5 cm with a 2.75 mm focal length. It offers HDR mode up to 3 megapixels and a 67-degree vertical field of view. Two-wire serial control manages the focus mechanism over I2C fast mode and fast-mode plus.

Makers and Developers Building NoIR Vision Projects

Suited for hobbyists and engineers creating low-light or infrared imaging applications with Raspberry Pi hardware. The wide field of view and close-focus capability serve robotics, monitoring and machine-vision prototypes. Not for users needing a standard visible-light camera with an IR cut filter or those requiring a narrower field of view.

Questions sur cet article

What does the 12-megapixel IMX708 sensor actually deliver when I use it on a Raspberry Pi?

The back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor captures 12-megapixel stills and full HD video, with an HDR mode that outputs up to 3 megapixels for high-contrast scenes.

How does the CSI-2 interface limit what I can record?

CSI-2 carries the serial data stream to the Raspberry Pi, where the libcamera library handles encoding; the practical ceiling is full HD video and 12-megapixel stills supported by the board.

Will the 0.98 by 0.94 inch board with its existing mounting holes fit my current Raspberry Pi case?

Yes, the PCB dimensions and mounting-hole layout are unchanged from Camera Module 2, so it fits the same cases and brackets.
