The StarTech P021GINETWORKCARD adds two gigabit SFP ports to a workstation or server using a single PCI Express 2.0 x1 slot. It is built around the Intel I350-AM2 chipset and targets administrators who need low-latency, low-CPU-overhead Ethernet for virtualised workloads and business services.

Bandwidth capped at the x1 gen-2 lane

The host interface is PCI Express 2.0 x1, so aggregate throughput cannot exceed the lane’s 5 GT/s signalling rate. Both ports share this single lane, making the card unsuitable for sustained line-rate traffic on two gigabit links simultaneously.

Upgrades single-port or on-board copper NICs

It replaces a single-port copper adapter or basic integrated NIC when SFP fibre uplinks or a second isolated gigabit link are required. The jump is worth it only if the chassis has a free x1 slot and the deployment needs VMDq, SR-IOV, PXE boot or 9K jumbo frames; buyers who need more than two ports or 10GbE speeds must choose a different controller.
