High-density blade compute

The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for virtualization, private cloud and high-performance computing workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6230 processors running at 2.1 GHz with a 3.9 GHz turbo frequency, providing 20 cores each. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 slots, expandable to 1.5 TB. Two 960 GB SAS SSDs and a PERC H330 controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 handle local storage.

Chassis and memory limits

This blade fits PowerEdge MX and M1000e enclosures and supports a maximum of two processors with up to 56 cores per server. Memory capacity tops out at 1.5 TB of DDR4, using the 16 available DIMM slots. The storage controller operates at 12 Gb/s over SAS and SATA interfaces, and the installed drives use a 2.5-inch form factor. NVMe support is listed for the platform, though the current configuration uses SAS SSDs. GPU options are limited to the integrated Matrox G200 with 8 MB video memory.

Remote management and networking

iDRAC9 Enterprise provides full out-of-band remote management for deployment, monitoring and updates without an operating system. A Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb daughter card supplies network connectivity through the chassis midplane. The unit ships without a front bezel or ready rails, which must be sourced separately if required. No operating system is pre-installed, allowing immediate installation of the preferred hypervisor or OS.
