Dual Xeon 1U server

The HP ProLiant DL160 Gen9 packs two Xeon E5-2650 v3 processors, each with 10 cores at 2.3 GHz, into a 1U rack chassis. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 ECC memory and two 1 TB 7.2K SATA drives sit behind the B140i software RAID controller. Redundant hot-swap 550 W power supplies keep the platform running in dense datacentre rows.

Upgrade from single-socket or Gen8

Moving from a single-socket box or an earlier generation adds 20 physical cores and 40 threads, doubling parallel throughput for virtualisation hosts or database nodes. The jump pays off when workloads scale beyond 12 to 16 threads and memory pressure exceeds 16 GB, because the 16 DIMM slots and C610 chipset allow later expansion to 1 TB of DDR4.

Sustained load behaviour

Under continuous multi-threaded load both CPUs maintain their 2.3 GHz base frequency while the 550 W redundant supplies share current evenly. The B140i controller limits sustained write bandwidth to the SATA drives, so heavy logging or backup streams will saturate the 6 Gbps link before the processors throttle. Fan speed ramps gradually, keeping inlet temperatures stable during extended compile or render jobs.
