Dual-processor 2U rack server

The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 fits into a standard 2U rack space and ships with two Intel Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processors running at 1.9 GHz. Ninety-six gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory fill 24 DIMM slots, reaching the installed maximum. Two 146 GB 15K SAS drives connect through the Smart HBA H240ar controller which supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. The Matrox G200eH2 GPU handles basic video output for management consoles.

Build integration and expansion

Eight small-form-factor drive bays accept 2.5-inch SAS or SATA devices and the chassis can be expanded to 16 or 24 bays using the optional additional bay kits. Two universal media bay slots and six NVMe drive positions are available in specific bays for further storage density. Dual redundant 500 W hot-swap power supplies free up a UPS or PDU feed for fail-over without downtime. The Intel C610 chipset provides the I/O backbone for add-in cards and the twelve memory channels per processor.

Thermals, noise and power

Redundant hot-swap power supplies share the load so each unit runs at lower utilisation, reducing fan speed during typical workloads. The 2U height allows larger heatsinks and directed airflow paths that keep the Xeon processors and memory within spec without aggressive fan curves. SAS drives spinning at 15K rpm generate measurable vibration and seek noise, so the server is intended for a dedicated rack room rather than an office desk. Power draw scales with processor load and drive activity but stays within the 500 W supply capacity per module.
