The Xeon Platinum 8490H is a 60-core server processor built on 10 nm Sapphire Rapids architecture. It delivers 120 threads for heavily parallel workloads such as virtualisation, large-scale databases and high-performance computing. The LGA 4677 socket and 350 W thermal design target dense multi-socket platforms.
Moving from a processor with fewer cores and smaller L3 cache becomes worthwhile when thread contention or memory bandwidth limits throughput. The 112.5 MB L3 cache, eight DDR5 channels and 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes remove bottlenecks that appear on parts with narrower memory subsystems or fewer lanes.
The integrated memory controller supports up to 4 TB of DDR5 across eight channels at 4800 MT/s single DIMM or 4400 MT/s dual DIMM per channel. This headroom handles large in-memory datasets and many virtual machines. Workloads needing more than 80 PCIe lanes or higher single-thread frequency will exceed the design envelope.

The processor uses the LGA 4677 socket and has a thermal design power of 350 W, so the motherboard must support this socket and provide adequate cooling capacity for that heat output.
The CPU is placed into the LGA 4677 socket with the alignment notches matched, the retention mechanism is locked, and a compatible cooler must be mounted — the step often missed is that no cooling device is included, so a suitable 350 W-rated cooler must be sourced separately before installation.
With one DIMM per channel the controller runs up to 4800 MT/s, with two DIMMs per channel it drops to 4400 MT/s, and the maximum supported capacity across the eight channels is 4 TB.
