Blade server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade that fits into PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6150 processors running at 2.7 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo and 18 cores each, giving 36 cores total. 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory is installed across four slots. The system targets virtualization, private cloud and high-performance computing workloads that need many cores in a small footprint.

Installation and common issues

The blade slides into a compatible chassis and connects through the midplane for power, cooling and networking. You must supply the chassis, power supplies and any required fabric modules yourself. Memory and storage caddies are accessible after removing the blade, but the CPU sockets and PCIe daughter cards are not user-serviceable. A frequent oversight is ordering the blade without confirming the chassis firmware supports the 6150 CPUs and the Broadcom 57810S-K 10 Gb dual-port network daughter card.

Interface and capacity limits

The PERC H330 controller provides 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA connectivity for the two 2.5-inch drive bays and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50. The board has 16 DDR4 slots with a maximum capacity of 2 TB, though the chassis may limit practical memory to 1.5 TB. The Broadcom 57810S-K delivers two 10 Gb Ethernet ports per blade. The Matrox G200 graphics core with 8 MB video memory is intended only for basic management console output.
