Rack server for virtualised workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R640 fits in a 1U rack space and carries two Xeon Silver 4210 processors running at 2.2 GHz with ten cores each. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory and a PERC H740P RAID controller ready for up to eight 2.5-inch SATA drives. Remote management is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise, and dual 750 W supplies provide redundancy.

Sustained compute with dual ten-core CPUs

Under continuous load the two Silver 4210 chips deliver twenty threads at a steady 2.2 GHz without relying on short turbo bursts. The 13.75 MB cache per processor helps keep data close during long database or virtualisation runs. Memory capacity can grow to 7.68 TB of DDR4 when the workload demands more headroom.

Redundant power and remote control

Dual 750 W power supplies share the load so a single unit failure does not interrupt operation. The iDRAC9 Enterprise controller gives out-of-band access for monitoring temperatures, fan speeds and power draw from anywhere. Integrated graphics and a 10 GbE two-port 562T adapter handle console and network traffic without extra cards.
