Purpose-built 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server designed for businesses that need dense compute and storage in a standard cabinet. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2609v3 six-core processor running at 1.9GHz and 96GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots. The system includes two 900GB 10K SAS drives and a PERC H730 RAID controller supporting levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Build integration and expandability

Dual 750W redundant hot-swap power supplies keep the platform running during a module failure. Eight 2.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives, while the H730 controller occupies a dedicated slot leaving up to seven PCIe 3.0 slots free for additional I/O. A four-port 1GbE daughter card provides baseline networking, with optional 10GbE NDC upgrades available. Remote management is handled by iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller.

Sustained-load behaviour

The 2U chassis uses redundant cooling to maintain stable temperatures during continuous operation. SAS 10K drives and the H730 controller deliver consistent throughput for mixed read-write workloads without the thermal throttling seen in smaller form factors. Memory runs at speeds supported by the installed processor, up to 2400MT/s, ensuring predictable latency for virtualisation or database tasks over long periods.
