The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation and database workloads. It ships with a single Intel Gold 6142 processor delivering 16 cores at 2.6 GHz and 128 GB of DDR4 memory. The H740P RAID controller manages two 2 TB 7.2K NL SAS drives. Remote administration is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise.

Tool-less rails and front drive access

The chassis includes sliding rails for rack mounting and supports up to eight 2.5-inch drive bays accessible from the front. Memory slots and PCIe Gen 3 expansion cards are reached by removing the top cover with thumb screws. Cable routing channels guide power and data leads away from airflow paths. The 1100 W redundant power supplies are hot-swappable from the rear.

128 GB DDR4 and dual 2 TB SAS

The installed 128 GB of DDR4 suits moderate consolidation and in-memory databases. Two 2 TB 7.2K SAS drives provide redundant capacity for operating systems and light application data. Workloads needing higher IOPS or larger datasets will require additional faster drives or external storage. Eight drive bays and eight PCIe Gen 3 slots give room to grow.
