The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for virtualisation and database workloads. It ships with two Intel Silver 4210R processors, each delivering 10 cores at 2.4 GHz. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 memory across eight 16 GB modules. Four 300 GB 10K SAS drives and an H730P RAID controller provide the initial storage foundation.

PCIe Gen 3 expansion limits

Up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots are available for additional controllers or network adapters. The integrated Intel X550 NDC already supplies two 10 Gb RJ45 and two 1 Gb RJ45 ports. Further I/O expansion must fit within the remaining Gen 3 lanes and the 2U chassis height. No optical drive bay is present, so external media is required for installation.

8-bay 2.5-inch drive constraint

The chassis supports a maximum of eight 2.5-inch drives, so total raw capacity is capped by the number and size of SAS drives installed. Four bays are occupied by the included 300 GB 10K units, leaving four bays for growth. Buyers who need more storage than eight drives can provide must consider a different platform.
